The Soft Focus Optic is part of the Lensbaby Optic Swap System, for use with Lensbaby’s Creative Effects SLR Camera lenses, the Composer, Composer Pro, Muse, Control Freak, Scout and Spark. The Soft Focus Optic allows photographers to turn their Lensbaby SLR lens into a soft focus lens by swapping out the installed optic and dropping the new Soft Focus Optic into the lens.
Soft Focus Optic images are overall soft and diffuse, while somewhat sharper in the center than at the edges. Photographers can control the degree of softness by using special soft focus apertures by themselves or in conjunction with regular Lensbaby aperture disks.
The Soft Focus Optic is different than Lensbaby’s previous optics, with a much flatter field of focus than the Double Glass, Single Glass, and Plastic Optics. The images created by the Soft Focus Optic have a beautiful, soft quality throughout the image and do not feature the Sweet Spot of sharp focus and dramatic blur outside of that spot created by the Double Glass, Single Glass, and Plastic Optics. Instead of bending the lens, photographers will typically point their Lensbaby straight ahead to achieve a classic soft focus look.
The Soft Focus Optic works with standard Lensbaby apertures, but also comes with three special soft focus multi-hole apertures that combine one large opening over the optic's sharp center with small openings over the optic's soft edges. This hole pattern creates a sharp underlying image with a soft overlay. Photographers can stack the soft focus apertures together or with standard Lensbaby apertures to vary the amount of softness.

I have been wanting a Lensbaby for a long time and I specifically wanted this optic because I love flower photography so much. Although I have had it for only a short time, it is everything I hoped it would be. The soft, dreamy look adds such a nice touch to the softness of the petals of the flowers. Highly recommend this optic for those wanting to enhance their creativity.

The soft focus optic is not be overlooked, it's a great lens. When I first got my soft focus optic I struggled with how I was going to match the optic with my personal style. I started shooting my Lovely Ladies series with it, which started off as an experiment and turned into a body of work that I was passionate about . The soft foucus optic was perfect for the vintage, timeless feeling I wanted to convey in the series. The optic performed well at close-up range and pulled back, giving great detail while maintaining that dreamy effect. And I loved the the star flare effect it gives to rhinestones and sequence. This lens is a great tool to be explored.

I have fallen in love with this optic! I use it primarily for my flower and nature photos, and love the dreamy look it adds to my images. It's always fun for me to share this optic with students when I teach location workshops, they find out pretty quickly why I recommend it so highly. Definitely try it with the special aperture disks that come with the optic!
